How to Properly Measure for New Doors: A Step-by-Step Guide

When it’s time to replace your old doors or install new ones, getting the measurements right is crucial. Whether you’re upgrading your entryway or adding new interior doors, accurate measurements will ensure a perfect fit. At Nick’s Building Supply, we want to help make the door insulation process as smooth as possible. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to measuring for new doors.

Step 1: Measure the Door Frame

Start by measuring the existing door frame where your new door will be installed. First, measure the width of the frame at three points: top, middle, and bottom. The smallest of these measurements will be your door width. Then, measure the height of the frame at both the left and the right sides. If you’re measuring for an entry door, don’t forget to measure the depth of the door frame, or the thickness of the door jamb, to ensure your new door fits within the frame properly.

Step 2: Measure the Door Swing

Next, determine which direction your door will swing. This is crucial for choosing the right hardware and ensuring it fits within the space. The hinge side will determine whether the food is a right-hand or left-hand swing. For left-hand doors, the hinges are on the left when you are standing inside the room, with the door swinging toward you. For right-hand doors, the hinges are on the right, and the door swings away from you.

Step 3: Consider Door Thickness

For standard interior doors, the typical thickness is 1 ⅜ inches, while exterior doors are usually 1 ¾ inches thick. However, custom doors can vary in thickness, so be sure to measure the thickness of your current door or check the manufacturer’s specifications for custom options. If you are replacing a door in an existing frame, keep in mind that the thickness of your new door should match the thickness of the frame to ensure a proper fit.

Step 4: Measure for Special Features

If you’re considering custom doors or doors with special features like decorative glass, sidelights, or custom hardware, make sure to factor in additional measurements for these elements. Also, if you plan on installing a door with a specific type of hardware, such as a larger handle or custom locks, account for the space needed to accommodate these features.

Step 5: Double-Check Your Measurements

Once you’ve taken all the necessary measurements, double-check them for accuracy. Small discrepancies or mistakes can lead to ill-fitting doors that may not close properly or look uneven. If you’re unsure at any point, don’t hesitate to ask Nick’s Building Supply for help.
